Day 1. Tsagaan Gol Valley
Arrive in Ulgii where you will be met by your guide. You will be driven to Tavan Bogd National Park through the magnificent wilderness scenery of Western Mongolia, stopping for lunch on the way. Within the shadow of Shiveet Khairkhan, the sacred mountain of the Tuvan people, where many Tuvan nomads live, we will set up camp. (lunch/dinner/tent). 200km
Day 2. Tavan bogd Base Camp
After loading our equipment on to pack-camels, we will ride by horse for 16km and arrive at the base camp of the snow-capped Tavanbogd mountains. Here, we will set up camp next to Potanin Glacier – the largest glacier in Mongolian Altai. We will camp here for two nights to enjoy the stunning spectacle which is Tavanbogd. Tavanbogd means “the Holy Five,” referring to the five highest peaks, of which Mount Khuiten is the highest in Mongolia standing at 4374 meters above sea level.
Day 3. Malchin Peak
Today we will climb Malchin Peak (non-technical) and enjoy the amazing views from the top of this mountain. You will also have time to walk onto Potanin Glacier, the longest glacier in Mongolia. (breakfast/lunch/dinner/tent)
Day 4. Tsagaan Gol Valley
We ride back to the Tsagaan Gol valley, which is the summer home of the Tuvan people, an ethnic minority with their own language. The Tuvan people are Buddhist, but they also practice Shamanism. You will have an opportunity to meet these fascinating people and perhaps sample their dairy products, including milk vodka, which is distilled from Yaks milk. (breakfast/lunch/dinner/tent)
Day 5. Bear Valley
We have allowed for two full days for the crossing of the Altai Mountain range, which is a total of 32km. We will set up camp before the snow line. This area is home to Snow Leopards and their prey, but they are extremely difficult to see, being extremely elusive and wary of man. However, there is a good chance of perhaps seeing the Altai Snowcock, the highest living bird in Mongolia. We will cross the Altai Range at 3600m and from this vantage point we will have stunning broad views across the Altais. At this point, we are very close to the top of Tsaagan Khairhan, (Sacred White Mountain at 3662m). From there, we will ride down to the scenic valley which the locals call Bear Valley and here we will set up camp for another two nights. We do some exploration around in our rest day (breakfast/lunch/dinner/tent)
Day 6. Green Lake
Today we will ride down a beautiful valley, here and there, patches of Larch woods and reach the so called Green Lake, where we will set up camp.
Day 7. Jagashtai River and Khoton Lake
Today will be a full day ride through an amazing river valley. Jagashtai river has its source in the Altai Tavanbogd, creating as well a series of beautiful lakes.
Our group, with horses and camels, will arrive in the valley of the lakes area. We will set up our camp here on the shore of Khoton Lake. Above us we will see the snow-capped mountain of Ikh Turgen. At this satge we are a mere 10km from the Chinese border. This area is the summer residence of numerous Kazakh herdsmen. They are a very friendly and hospitable people and welcome visitors to their Gers
Day 8. Baga Thurgen Valley and waterfalls
Today we will ride to the Baga Turgen Valley, where there are three beautiful waterfalls, this area is full of wild fruits, red currents, black currents and gooseberries are found in abundance. We will set up camp here and visit local families and find out about their life and their culture. (breakfast/lunch/dinner/tent)
Day 9. Return to Ulgii
After breakfast we will return to Ulgii passing through the Khovd River Valley where we will get the opportunity to see Deer Stones and Turkic Stone Men as well as ancient burial sites. You will also have the opportunity to visit an Eagle Hunter and learn about this ancient Kazakh form of hunting with Golden Eagles. In the evening you will stay in a Ger camp and enjoy a traditional Kazakh concert and meal of Beshbarmak.
Day 10. Return to UB
After breakfast we will take you to the airport to catch your flight back to Ulaanbaatar.
Horse Trek in Tavan Bogd National Park
This horse trekking trip will take you through Tavan Bogd National Park to the stunningly beautiful Altai Mountain Range in the far western part of Mongolia. The countryside here is magnificent and remote and you will have the opportunity to ride through some majestic countryside. You will also have the opportunity to meet Kazakh and Tuvan nomadic people and learn something of their lifestyle and culture.
